High Schoolers Can Now Earn Credit Toward a TTUHSC El Paso Nursing Degree

Students at Franklin High School can now begin working toward their Bachelor of Science in Nursing (B.S.N.), thanks to a new partnership between Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center El Paso (TTUHSC El Paso) and El Paso Independent School District (EPISD).

“Upon high school graduation, students will be able to begin junior- and senior-level university nursing classes with us,” says Manuel Santa Cruz, D.N.P., assistant dean of TTUHSC El Paso’s Gayle Greve Hunt School of Nursing (GGHSON). “That means that they can potentially have their B.S.N. by the age of 19 or 20.”

The program is designed to address the expansion of science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics-related industries on El Paso’s west side — with the goal of developing a home-grown workforce. Students accepted into this pathway are conditionally accepted into the GGHSON and a short 16 months away from earning their B.S.N. after high school graduation.

In late May, approximately 30 incoming freshmen at Franklin High School got their first glimpse of a nursing education by visiting the GGHSON. The students had the opportunity to meet and greet with GGHSON staff and faculty and tour the school’s state-of-the-art facility.

For more information about the program, contact the Franklin High School Ninth Grade Center at 915-236-2400 or email oarico1@episd.org.
