Assistant Professor

Jun Zhang PhD, ScD, received his ScD from Chinese Academy of Sciences in 1991 and his PhD in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (BMB) from the University of Florida in 1998. He completed his post-doctoral training and fellowship in human molecular genetics at Howard Hughes Medical Institute and McKusick-Nathan's Institute of Genetic Medicine of The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. He started his independent research career in human molecular genetics with appointments at Johns Hopkins in 2002, followed at University of Mississippi Medical Center in 2006, and now at Texas Tech. His research areas focus on human neurogenetics, and molecular etiology in human vascular disorders. Before coming to TTUHSC, he was a research director at UMMC Neurosurgery with joint academic appointments in several departments. He will be Research Director and Assistant Professor in the Department of Anesthesiology with joint appointments in the Department of Biomedical Sciences and the Center of Excellence for Neurosciences at Texas Tech University Health Science Center.

Sheng Shen, MD, PhD

Post Doctorla Research Associate

Sheng Shen MD, PhD, received his MD from West China Medical Center of Sichuan University in 2004 and PhD from Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention in 2010. His previous laboratory research focused on pathogenic bacteria, virus detection and HIV recent/new infection among high risk population. Currently, Dr. Shen focuses on the research of molecular genetics in the Department of Anesthesiology.

Yanchun Qu, PhD

Post Doctoral Research Associate

Yanchun Qu, PhD graduated from the Institute of Genetics and Developmental Biology, Chinese Academy of Science in 2006. He received his post graduate training in Louisville University and worked as a research scholar with Tianjin Urological Institute of Tianjin Medical University. Dr. Qu is fully trained in genetics and molecular biology and focused on molecular genetics of kidney development and disease before he decided to join TTUHSC. Presently, Dr. Qu is focusing his research on next generation sequencing as a postdoc research associate in the Department of Anesthesiology.

Saafan Malik, MD

Post Doctoral Research Associate

Dr. Saafan Malik received his MD from King Edward Medical University. He completed his post-doctoral training (stem cell transplant and gene therapy) on Neurodegenerative diseases at the Carolinas Neuroscience & Spine Institute of the Carolinas Medical Center. He was awarded NIH-Ruth L. Kirschtein (NRSA) Fellowship at the Dept. of Neurosurgery, University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, where he conducted research on neuroprotective strategies after Traumatic Brain Injury. His TBI research work was awarded Murray Goldstein Award of excellence at the National Neurotrauma Society Conference. As a Senior Research Investigator at the University of Pennsylvania he continued research on the role of neural progenitor cells in the brain and initiated a clinical research study for TBI patients. Recently he completed one year clinical residency training in Neurological Surgery at the Cleveland Clinic, OH. Currently he is establishing Traumatic Brain Injury research lab at the Dept. of Anesthesiology TTUHSC, Paul L. Foster School of Medicine. He will also be involved in clinical research trials
