Family and Community Medicine

The Paul L. Foster School of Medicine at the Texas Tech Health Science Center of El Paso is proud to offer the Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship through the Department of Family and Community Medicine. We are an ACGME accredited program in Sports Medicine and take great pride in our treatment of athletes and in the education of Sports Medicine Fellows within the El Paso region

Our goal is as follows:

The Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship strives to create an educational experience in Sports Medicine that will enrich the fellow in the many facets of caring for athletes. Through this experience, the fellow will develop skill, knowledge and proficiency in the evaluation, treatment and rehabilitation of sports related injuries and illnesses.

To obtain this high level of education our program will expose the fellow to a wide variety of dynamic sports medicine environments;

The Clinic - our home Sports Medicine Clinic is situated in Northeast El Paso and is open to athletes from all walks of life. Our facility boasts access to full radiology services from x-rays and ultrasounds to CT's and MRI's in addition to a full rehabilitation center. All just down the hall from our examination rooms. It’s here that a great deal of the core sports medicine learning happens. Supervised directly By Dr. Islas and Dr. Wright, our fellows will encounter patients and athletes from all types of sports in the sports medicine clinic and will assist them with their musculoskeletal or athletic injury.

The Training Rooms - our program has partnered with a myriad of area high schools, the El Paso Diablos, the El Paso Rhinos, and the University of Texas at El Paso

and participates in training room clinics which offer first hand exposure to athletes and their injuries and illnesses. As team physicians, Dr. Wight, Dr. Islas and the Sports Medicine Fellows, will see and treat athletes from a variety of teams and sports within the training rooms giving the Fellows real time experience in caring for athletes.

The Field - we provide our fellows with a variety of "on field" experiences from football games to the Eagle in the Sun Triathlon to the El Paso Marathon. Through these experiences the fellows will gather skills that will serve as the basis of their onsite and mass participation event management of athletes and their needs. In addition, since Drs. Islas and Wright are the Race Medical Directors, the Fellows will learn about the importance of race planning and the impact of large mass participation events on the city infrastructure.

The fellows will be exposed to a variety of wilderness specific lectures and discussions and will gain skills in regards to the management of athletes in wilderness settings. As Medical Director for the Guadalupe Mountains National Park, Drs. Islas and Wright will assure that the fellows will have hands on exposure to subjects such as wilderness first aid, extrication guidelines and wilderness medicine improvisational techniques. In addition, an agreement between the fellowship and the WMS is being forged to provide the fellow credits for the wilderness medicine lectures received during their training towards the WMS - Fellow of the Academy of Wilderness Medicine degree. In addition, the relationship between the Fellowship and the WMS will provide the fellows with exposure to other wilderness opportunities throughout the nation and worldwide. One of our favorite organizations is the Everest Base Camp Clinic.
