Division of Neonatology
Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center has been providing health services for the El Paso community since its opening in 1973. Together with University Medical Center of El Paso which opened its doors in 1915 initially as El Paso-City County Hospital, they have continued to provide health services for the surrounding areas of El Paso, Las Cruces and Cuidad Juarez. In 2010, the Neonatal Unit at University Medical Center alone witnessed 4128 live births.
University Medical Center El Paso and Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center work together caring for our newborns in the Neonatal Unit. The Neonatal units include the Newborn Nursery which is designated for infants with short hospital stays. The Special Care Nurseries include the Intermediate Care Nursery and the Intensive Care Nursery units for our infants with special needs and those who may be critically ill.
At Texas Tech and University Medical Center El Paso, we are especially proud of our neonatal morbidity rates and a 2010 neonatal mortality rate which averaged a low .5/1,000 live births. These rates are the result of tireless working hours from our staff, residents and physicians who make it their primary goal to ensure that all our babies are taken care of in the most effective and efficient manner possible. As a result of this accomplishment, we have one of the lowest mortality rates in the region.

- The purpose of Neonatology as a sub-specialty of Pediatrics is the support and study of the newborn infant regarding diagnosis and treatment of physiologic, congenital and acquired disorders.
The mission of the Neonatology Section, under the leadership of its director, is to provide the highest quality of proper medical care, while serving as role models for students, residents and nurses. Our desire is to conduct investigative clinical research and follow-up examinations of high risk infants. This total service plan, in collaboration with the department of OB/GYN is aimed at improving the perinatal period for newborns in our hospital population.
