Histology Core Laboratory

The Histopathology Core Facility provides pathophysiology research services for the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center biomedical laboratories network in Lubbock and locally for the the Centers of Excellence, the Emergency Medicine, the Orthopedics and the Centers of Excellence, the Emergency Medicine, the Orthopedics and Rehabilitation research divisions, and to the University of Texas at El Paso.

The services provided include cytological procedures, paraffin and plastic embedding of tissues, microtomy, ultrathin -sectioning, preparation of stained and unstained tissue sections routine histology, histo-chemistry, immuno-histochemistry, immuno-fluorescence, image reconstruction analysis including neurolucida ™ reconstructions, confocal microscopy, digital imaging with image telemedicine server, cryotomy including laser capture microscopy procedures, and isolation of nucleic acids from paraffin embedded tissues in situ hybridization and tissue arrays. In the future, this core will be part of the Paul L Foster School of Medicine Human Tissues Resource Initiative. These techniques are used to understand the normal function of organs (physiology) and pathological processes (Pathology).

In addition, the Histopathology Core Facility offers veterinary laboratory services that includes plasma measurements of pH, glucose, BUN, creatinine, BUN/creatinine ratio, uric acid, cholesterol, triglyceride, GOT, total bilirubin, alkaline phosphatase, GPT, GGT, calcium, total protein, amylase, and plasma osmolality. The HCF also offers determinations of hormones and cytokines using Luminex assays based on xMap Technology®. Urinalysis services are available using urinalysis chemstrips, microscopy, osmolality using vapor osmometry, microelectrode-based pH and ionogram (Na, K, Cl) measurements. These techniques are used to understand the normal function of organs (physiology) and pathological processes (Pathology) as well.
