Ways to Give

Annual Giving

Our Annual Giving program raises money that directly benefits TTUHSC El Paso. This includes funding financial aid and scholarships; student services such as counseling and student organizations; faculty research; course development and special programs; and alumni and business relations.

Annual gifts are also used for special administrative support associated with raising major gifts; faculty recruitment; equipment and technology; and facility maintenance and renovation.

When you make an annual gift, you invest in the future of TTUHSC El Paso and its students.

Why should I give? Aren't tuition and tax dollars enough?
TTUHSC El Paso is successful today due to your private support. The reality is that state funding is getting tighter. To maintain the quality of education that characterizes TTUHSC El Paso, more money will need to come from the private sector.

Why should I give to TTUHSC El Paso when I am still paying off my college debt?
Your education would have cost much more without the support of alumni who gave generously to the university. Your gift will enable the next generation of doctors, nurses and researchers to continue that legacy.

My small gift would be a drop in the bucket. Why should I bother giving?
Think about it: 10,000 gifts of $50 equal $500,000. That amount could fund a $1,000 scholarship for 500 TTUHSC El Paso students next year alone.

I have a small paycheck and lots of expenses. How can I afford a large gift this year?
TTUHSC El Paso is not asking you to make a gift that will break the bank. We just want to get as many alumni as possible involved. When we all work together, we can make great things happen. Any amount is helpful and greatly appreciated.

How can I ensure that my gift supports the area I choose?
You decide where your gift goes simply by designating the college, campus or program of your choice. Whether you give via mail, make a pledge over the phone or donate online, you have the opportunity to tell us what to do with your gift. Rest assured that your hard-earned dollars help the area you choose.

Is my donation tax deductible, and will I receive a receipt?
Yes, all gifts are tax deductible to the fullest extent of the law. You will receive an acknowledgement or gift receipt seven to 10 days after you make your gift.

I already gave to the Alumni Association. Why is TTUHSC El Paso asking for more?
It can be confusing, but the Alumni Association and Annual Giving are two separate programs.

Annual Giving is responsible for raising money for each of the colleges and their various programs. The funds raised provide for scholarships, faculty recruitment, and facility upgrades, among other things. We raise funds for academic purposes.

Gifts to the Alumni Association pay for your TTUHSC El Paso alumni magazine subscription, admission to special alumni events, recruitment camps, commemorative items and other administrative costs. Only a portion of your gift supports TTUHSC El Paso through scholarships.

Can I give specifically to my campus, college or department?
Yes, and you can support the libraries and other scholarships, research projects, and student activities and programs.

When I give to "unrestricted funds," where does the money go?
Unrestricted funds stay within the specified college or department. Funds donated for general use are considered unrestricted. They are especially important to TTUHSC El Paso and the colleges that receive them. They provide the financial resources necessary to upgrade technology, maintain facilities, support scholarship programs, recruit faculty and students and maintain facilities.

I'm always getting phone calls asking for donations. How often do you call?
We understand that our alumni get many requests. Annual Giving will call you only once per fiscal year (September–August).

For people age 70½ and older, the Charitable IRA Rollover is a tax-wise way to give to TTUHSC El Paso.

What is a Charitable IRA Rollover?

Beginning at age 70½, people with an Individual Retirement Account (IRA) are required to withdraw a minimum amount from their account every year. This is known as the required minimum distribution.

The required minimum distribution is taxed as income. People who do not need the income or who wish to reduce their tax liability can meet the required minimum distribution by transferring funds from their IRA to a charity. This way of giving is called a Charitable IRA Rollover.

What you need to know

Charitable IRA Rollover gifts are easy to make, but there are a few requirements.

  • Donors must be age 70½ and older.
  • Funds must come from a traditional IRA account.
  • Your gift must go directly to the charity. You cannot cash it out first.
  • Your IRA administrator can process the transfer for you.
  • The maximum contribution is $100,000.
  • The Charitable IRA Rollover is now a permanent giving option, available year-round.
