TTUHSC El Paso Sees Record Growth

TTUHSC El Paso Sees Record GrowthA record number of students have enrolled at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center El Paso (TTUHSC El Paso) this year to pursue degrees in medicine, nursing and biomedical sciences.

TTUHSC El Paso has seen steady growth every year since becoming a standalone institution in 2013, reaching a total enrollment of 670 for fall 2017 — a 10 percent increase from last year’s 607. Combined with its approximately 265 medical residents and fellows, the health sciences center is educating nearly 1,000 health care professionals this year alone.

This increase in enrollment parallels major expansion efforts, like construction of the university’s new Medical Sciences Building (MSB) II and planning of its dental school, expected to open in 2019 and 2020, respectively.

“Training more health professionals makes a big difference in the health of our community,” said Kathryn Horn, M.D., assistant vice president for student services. “Our students serve people who otherwise would not have access to health care at student run clinics. They organize service days like the upcoming Corazón de Oro, where students from all schools spend a Saturday morning volunteering at local organizations across the city.”

Other pivotal changes include the Gayle Greve Hunt School of Nursing (GGHSON)’s new Master of Science in Nursing (M.S.N.) in Leadership. The hybrid program is designed for working nurses to acquire the competencies required for advanced roles in management and administration.

The first round of admissions for the M.S.N. program is currently underway, with students officially starting classes in spring 2018.

In addition to making enrollment history, TTUHSC El Paso’s fall 2017 semester will feature a number of community events, including:
