CDC, local experts offer advice on minimizing risk after returning from holiday travel

Locally, experts say they are most concerned about air travel. “I worry still about air travel because there is a fair amount of crowding again in the airports,” Dr. Ed Michelson, the Chair of Emergency Medicine at Texas Tech Health Sciences Center of El Paso. “There's lining up where you're near people and obviously the time you spend in the aircraft. If you travel on an airplane, my suggestion is to wear a mask. 100% of the time, while you're on the plane. “ As for protecting yourself while using bathrooms or rest stops, the CDC says washing your hands is critical and recommends bringing hand sanitizer with you, in case at any point you don't have access to soap and water.

Nearly 40 students from the Hunt School of Nursing and the Foster School of Medicine at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center El Paso volunteered to administer the COVID-19 vaccine to health care workers in the Borderland. Nursing students did rotations at local hospitals taking care of COVID-19 patients. “About a week before commencement, we were notified about the need for volunteers,” said Mariana Madrid, who graduated this past weekend with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. “To represent the Hunt School of Nursing in my last few days as a student was so meaningful and I wanted to give back to our health care heroes.”

Moderna COVID-19 vaccine allows for more widespread vaccination in El Paso

More Moderna vaccines are headed to El Paso than Pfizer as of now, some health experts say it can be because the Moderna is more convenient and easier to store. “This vaccine is going to be easier in the way it is handled and stored than the Pfizer vaccine,” Dr. Armando Meza, Chief of Infectious Diseases, TTUHSC El Paso, said. As we’ve reported, the Pfizer vaccine must be kept at extreme cold temperatures in an ultra-cold freezer or else it will spoil and be useless. Dr. Meza said Moderna’s vaccine can just be stored in a regular refrigerator that most clinics and providers already have for other vaccines.

University Medical Center workers receive vaccine, doctor encourages getting it

UMC received more than 2,900 doses. The hospital will continue to administer the vaccine to workers on Wednesday. "So far the vaccine has only had local side effects and systemic side effects that don’t last longer than two days," Dr. Armando Meza, Chief Infectious Disease Specialist, with Texas Tech Health Sciences Center said. "Those symptoms can be fatigue, headache, and fever." Doctor Meza encourages everyone to get the vaccine once available. He says even if you feel symptoms, that isn't necessarily a bad thing.

The meals were individually packaged and given to health care professionals whose long shifts and busy schedules often left medical staff with no time to purchase food for themselves throughout the day. “We recently received a generous grant from the Business Solutions Center at the El Paso Chamber of Commerce,” said Maggie Asfahani, owner of Salt+Honey Bakery Café. “This grant allows us to not only continue operations and keep staff employed, but it also gives us the opportunity to support those on the front lines of this pandemic. We want to show our appreciation in whatever way we can.”

As of Friday, Walgreens data showed the El Paso/Las Cruces region ranked fourth highest among U.S. market for the number of prescriptions written for antiviral medication used to treat the flu. El Paso has begun treating some COVID-19 patients with a new monoclonal antibody infusion, called bamlanivimab. A wing of the El Paso Convention Center's makeshift hospital is dedicated entirely to this new outpatient treatment.
