Center of Emphasis in Neurosciences

The Center of Emphasis in Neurosciences is composed of a group of scientists and faculty specializing in genetics, etiology, psychiatric disorders, genetics of eye diseases, optic trauma, and genetic development of the nervous system. To this end, center researchers are further developing a population cohort bio-bank that will allow for the generation of population-based samples for research; unique for the nation. These samples can be used to inform studies in neurologic and psychiatric illnesses, cancer, diabetes, and other illnesses, as well as shared through the National Institute of Health-funded data sharing agreement. Additionally, the bio-bank can be used to increase the statistical power of minority populations in genome-wide association studies, which are currently unable to address many questions in medically underserved Hispanic minority patients. Complementing these activities is the development of a special senses program in genetic diseases of the eye and in optic nerve trauma.

COE-N’s neuroscientists and molecular biologists specialize in gene mapping of psychiatric disorders with a goal of identifying the genes that underlie major mental illnesses and developing treatment strategies informed by understanding the genetics of mental illnesses.

These studies and research also focus on the environmental and psychological factors that contribute to mental illness. COE-N’s group of clinicians, fellows, study coordinators, and research and administrative staff are dedicated to and experienced in the diagnosis, study, and treatment of serious mental illnesses, with a special expertise in the study of debilitating diseases within the Latin American population of the United States, Mexico, Caribbean, and Central and South America.
