Visiting Medical Student Subinternship

For the 2022-2023 Academic Year, Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center El Paso will be participating in the Visiting Student Learning Opportunities (VSLO) system.

Visiting medical students will have the benefit of a full educational experience, designed to mirror the duties of a first-year resident. Students will have the opportunity to rotate through a variety of subspecialties within the department including trauma, sports, pediatrics, reconstruction, tumor, and hand. Students will be credentialed at University Medical Center of El Paso, the Level I county hospital, and William Beaumont Army Medical Center, the Fort Bliss Army Hospital, as well as any outside hospitals as needed for the rotation.  During the rotation, students are welcome and encouraged to attend all resident academics, wellness sessions, journal clubs, and group hangouts. Students participate in daily inpatient rounds, operative cases, and outpatient clinics. Students will also have the opportunity to shadow residents during overnight call for two weekends during the rotation.

At the end of the rotation, visiting medical students will prepare a 10-15-minute presentation to the program at our Wednesday academics.

Preferred Dates

TTUHSC El Paso will be accepting sub-internship electives through the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and Rehabilitation from June 2022 to April 2023 for the upcoming school year. Please consider rotating prior to November if you plan on rotating and applying to our program. An “audition” rotation at our program is not a prerequisite for an interview invitation.
