2015 Texas Tech Presidential Collaborative Research Initiative

Several Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center (TTUHSC) El Paso faculty have been chosen to participate in a new program that is fostering collaboration and funding innovative research among Texas Tech University System campuses.

The Texas Tech Presidential Collaborative Research Initiative was designed to encourage new interdisciplinary investigative programs designed to enhance collaborations between faculty with different types of scientific expertise, and lead to new extra-mural funding.

“I’m pleased to see our TTUHSC El Paso experts among the innovative and accomplished researchers who participated in this very competitive, inaugural system-wide collaborative grants program,” said TTUHSC El Paso President Richard Lange. “I look forward to seeing the results of these research proposals and efforts.”

Awarded proposals that include TTUHSC El Paso faculty are as follows:

  • “New and More Sensitive Diagnostic Tests for Infectious Diseases” (Dr. Ming-Tao Zeng collaborating with Drs. Anthony Kaye, Anthony Cozzolino, and John D’Auria at TTU);
  • “Genetic Studies on Eye Infections” (Dr. Olof Sundin collaborating with Dr. Ted Reid and colleagues in the Department of Ophthalmology at TTUHSC);
  • “New Diagnostic and Treatment Approaches for Different Types of Cancer” (Dr. Himanshu Garg and Anjali Joshi collaborating with Dr. Weimin Gao at TTU);
  • Development of Improved Diagnostics for Depression” (Drs. Michael Escamilla, Hugo Sandoval, and Luis Ramos-Duran collaborating with Dr. Michael O’Boyle at TTU).

A total of 33 faculty comprising 11 research groups were granted funding. The program was developed by the presidents of TTUHSC El Paso, Texas Tech University (TTU), Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center (TTUHSC), and by the Chancellor of the Texas Tech University System.
